(2022, Science) concluded early genomic diversity comprised two basal lineages (A and B) resulting from at least two separate cross-species transmission events; their phylodynamic simulations found a low probability of two basal polytomies under a single introduction and 'do not support a single introduction' producing the observed pattern. Both lineages' market linkage was later strengthened by identification of lineage A in a Huanan environmental sample and geographically proximate lineage A cases (Worobey et al. 2022; Crits-Christoph et al., Cell 2024). AGAINST (single introduction consistent): A biorxiv analysis ('Statistical challenges for inferring multiple SARS-CoV-2 spillovers') argues Pekar et al.'s conclusion is sensitive to more realistic model assumptions.
