The WIV held undisclosed bat coronaviruses more similar to SARS-CoV-2 than those it published
Assessment
No credible evidence found, though the claim is not contradicted.
This claim has two parts, and only the weaker one is established. It is well documented that the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) held bat coronavirus material it never made public — most visibly a large sample/sequence database (~22,000 records, ~1,000 coronaviruses) taken offline in September 2019 and never restored, together with sequences such as the additional Mojiang-mine SARS-related viruses and RaTG13 study metadata that were disclosed only belatedly. What remains unsupported is the stronger and consequential proposition: that at least one of the withheld viruses was more genetically similar to SARS-CoV-2 than the viruses the WIV published. After years of scrutiny, no such closer WIV-held virus has surfaced. RaTG13 (~96.2%) is still the closest known relative from the WIV collection; the marginally closer BANAL-52 (~96.8%) was found in Laos by the Institut Pasteur, not the WIV; and Shi Zhengli's December 2024 presentation of dozens of additional coronaviruses from the WIV collection reported none that are recent ancestors of SARS-CoV-2. The affirmative case therefore rests on opportunity and motive — a demonstrable pattern of withholding — rather than on any positive sighting of a closer sequence. Because the deleted database remains inaccessible, the specific proposition can be neither confirmed nor directly refuted; it is a reasonable suspicion, not an established fact. Independent release and analysis of the withheld database or of new closer sequences would move this toward contested, contradicted, or verified.
Full reasoning — evidence and decisions behind this verdict
Structure: the claim rests on (1) WIV possessed undisclosed unpublished sequences [subclaim 57d4b245] and presupposes (2) WIV held RaTG13, the closest known relative at outbreak [bbae5a36]. The crux is a THIRD, unstated proposition folded into the canonical form: that a withheld virus was MORE similar to SARS-CoV-2 than what WIV published.
Subclaim change (trigger): 57d4b245 moved to SUPPORTED (0.8) — possession/non-disclosure now formally established via the Sept 2019 database takedown (never republished), late disclosure of the Mojiang/4991 clade, and RaTG13 metadata forensics; SUPPORTED rather than VERIFIED because the primary artifact (the database) is inaccessible. This is exactly the input the prior assessment already relied on; the change reinforces the weaker part without touching the crux. The change note itself flags that it establishes possession only, NOT the stronger similarity claim.
Crux evidence (unchanged and re-checked Jul 2026): No released sequence shows a WIV-held virus closer than RaTG13 (~96.2%). Closest overall known relative BANAL-52 (~96.8%) was found in Laos by Institut Pasteur, not the WIV. Shi Zhengli's Dec 2024 conference presentation (Nature d41586-024-03982-2; Scientific American) reported dozens of additional WIV-collection coronaviruses, none recent ancestors of SARS-CoV-2 — a curated, self-interested disclosure that does not address the withheld 2019 database, so it neither verifies nor conclusively refutes the proposition. Fresh search (2025–2026 sources incl. RaTG13 Wikipedia Dec 2025, Nature Dec 2024) surfaces no closer WIV-held virus.
Weighing: the affirmative case is opportunity + motive (demonstrable withholding of a large database), not a positive sighting — a basis for suspicion, not verification. Not CONTRADICTED, because no direct refutation is possible while the database is withheld and WIV's denial is self-interested (evidence of absence is unavailable). UNSUPPORTED: no credible evidence produced for the specific proposition (lack of evidence, distinct from evidence of absence). Confidence 0.6; would move to CONTESTED/CONTRADICTED/VERIFIED if the withheld database or new sequences were released and independently analyzed.
