The first large clinical description of COVID-19 — Huang and colleagues' study of 41 hospitalized patients, published in The Lancet on 24 January 2020 — reported that the earliest identified patient had symptom onset on 1 December 2019, had no reported connection to the Huanan Seafood Market, and that no epidemiological link was found between this first patient and later cases. This finding was widely noted at the time as a challenge to the assumption that the market was the origin of the outbreak. Importantly, the claim concerns what a peer-reviewed report documented, not whether that documentation is correct. The accuracy of the 1 December date is itself disputed: in a 2021 analysis, Worobey argued the date was a transcription error (placing the patient's actual onset in mid-December) and that the earliest documented cases were instead linked to the market. That downstream dispute does not affect the present claim, which is simply that such a case was documented in a peer-reviewed report — and it was.
