Trigger: staleness check plus two subclaim changes (both subclaims moved to verified with independent recomputation). The two gaps the prior supported verdict named were closed: (1) the preprint arXiv:2608.02634 was opened via provenance_read_source; its title and abstract explicitly name the separable (Adjamagbo) formulation; (2) the core computations were reproduced in this pass over GF(2) with sympy (det = 1, three points collide at (0,1), lex Gröbner elimination cubic b²x³+(a³+ab+1)x+a giving generic degree 3, separable since 3 is odd). Two web searches found no dissent, correction or retraction. Upgraded to verified, confidence 0.92, credence 0.97, marginal_yield 0.1. Canonical form changed from "The two-dimensional Jacobian conjecture is false in characteristic two" to "The separable Jacobian conjecture is false in dimension two in characteristic two". Judged not to be an individuation change: the naive statement is trivially true in char p and no source debates it; the prior assessment already read the claim in the substantive sense per fidelity, and all three instances (Mondello's preprint, Speyer's two comments) mean the separable form. Direction unchanged; now parallel to the sibling dimension-three claim. Not escalated to the Curator for this reason, though the record here makes the judgment reviewable. Provenance: recorded the preprint as a primary affirming instance; readings for all three instances (preprint supports its assertion; both Speyer comments assert without evidence of their own); repeats edges from both comments to the preprint (one mildly strengthened by dropping "separable"); shares_authorship relation between the two Speyer comment sources; source map written and marked material since all support traces to one primary document and the two secondary voices are one commenter. Importance revised 0.35 → 0.30, contestation 0.15: settled, notable-tier context for the live characteristic-zero debate. Notified the single dependent (the classical ℂ² conjecture) and flagged that its contradicts edge from this claim may warrant review, as a char-2 separable result has no logical bearing on the char-0 statement; that edge is the dependent steward's to judge.

In positive characteristic the Jacobian conjecture cannot be stated naively, since maps such as x ↦ x + x² have Jacobian determinant 1 yet are two-to-one. The substantive form, due to Adjamagbo, asserts that a polynomial self-map of affine space with invertible Jacobian determinant and generic degree prime to the characteristic is an automorphism. In July 2026 Romy Mondello posted a ten-page preprint exhibiting an explicit counterexample to this statement in dimension two over the algebraic closure of the field with two elements: the map F = (P, Q) with P = x + x²y + x⁴ + x⁶y² and Q = y + x⁵ + x⁶y + x⁷y² + x⁸y³. Its Jacobian determinant is identically 1, the three distinct points (0,1), (1,0) and (1,1) all map to (0,1), and the induced extension of rational function fields has degree exactly 3, which is odd and therefore both prime to the characteristic and separable. Every load-bearing step is a finite exact computation, and the correctness of Mondello's construction has been confirmed by independent computer algebra: the determinant, the collision, and the elimination cubic b²x³ + (a³ + ab + 1)x + a that fixes the generic degree at 3 all reproduce. The map was found by restricting Huq-Kuruvilla's dimension-three characteristic-two counterexample to a fibre, so the same mechanism is now known to work in dimensions two and three. The preprint has not been peer reviewed and carries a Lean 4 formalization that its author presents as a receipt rather than a substitute for review, but no source disputes the construction and nothing short of a computational error, which independent checks exclude, would overturn it. The result says nothing about the classical conjecture over the complex numbers, where the two-dimensional case remains open; it also leaves open the two-dimensional case in odd characteristics. The one residual qualification is definitional: if the discourse were to settle on a characteristic-p formulation other than Adjamagbo's, the claim would need restating rather than being false.
Structured and assessed
First pass (structure_and_assess). Decomposition: the claim turns on one load-bearing premise, so I created (after match_claim returned novel for both) a requires subclaim "Mondello's characteristic-two counterexample to the two-dimensional Jacobian conjecture is mathematically correct" (b800f718, seeded 0.85) and a supports subclaim "The Jacobian conjecture is false in dimension three in characteristic two" (26ba32bb, seeded 0.9), the lineage the construction descends from. I deliberately did not mint "JC is false in dimension three over characteristic zero" despite the Matcher confirming novelty: my claim does not depend on it, and the neighboring territory is already held by existing claims (a87e655a "false in every dimension n ≥ 3", 085e13a9 the July 2026 counterexample event). One natural line of support, so no named argument; the two subclaims stand as the claim's basis. Evidence: four web searches (budget then exhausted). Found the sbseminar source (already an instance), Speyer's affirming comment on Tao's blog (recorded as a second instance, 2026-08-06), the arXiv follow-up 2608.00222 confirming the char-0 dim-2 case remains open, and the char-2 dim-3 lineage (Chow, N8Programs, Huq-Kuruvilla arXiv:2607.20968). Could not open Mondello's preprint arXiv:2608.02634 itself; that gap is why the verdict is supported (0.7, credence 0.85) rather than verified, and why marginal_yield is 0.55: a pass that reads the preprint and pins the exact characteristic-p formulation (the naive one is trivially false via Artin-Schreier) would materially sharpen this. Importance set to 0.35 (contestation 0.2), down from the Extractor's 0.55: notable within a live episode, but consequence is local to research mathematics and no expert dissent exists. Canonical form kept: short, neutral, and matches how the discourse states it. No dependents exist, so no notification sent. Policies: V (all evidence traceable to named URLs), SH (primary preprint unreachable, noted as the assessment's main limit), EU (verdict withheld from verified; formulation ambiguity named), CI (claim read under the substantive characteristic-p formulation the discourse intends, not the trivially true naive reading).

In August 2026 Romy Mondello posted a counterexample to the two-dimensional Jacobian conjecture in characteristic two (arXiv:2608.02634), the first two-dimensional result of any kind in the wave of counterexamples that followed Alpöge's July 2026 refutation of the classical conjecture in dimension three. The claim therefore rests on whether Mondello's construction is correct. That has not yet been confirmed by peer review, but the surrounding evidence favors it: counterexamples of this kind are finite, directly checkable objects; the construction was derived from dimension-three characteristic-two counterexamples produced independently by several people; and David Speyer, an expert in the area, reported and endorsed the result in two venues with no dissent recorded. A point of precision: the naive Jacobian condition fails trivially in any positive characteristic (the map sending x to x minus x squared has derivative 1 in characteristic two yet is two-to-one), so the substantive characteristic-p conjecture excludes such cases, and it is that formulation the discourse treats Mondello's example as refuting. Community verification of the preprint, or its peer-reviewed publication, would settle the claim; a flaw found in the construction would return the two-dimensional characteristic-two case to open. The classical two-dimensional conjecture in characteristic zero remains open and is untouched by this result.
