Among Claude models, chain-of-thought controllability tracks model size rather than release date.

Assessment

Insufficient information to assess.

The claim holds that, among Claude models, how well a model can control the content of its own chain of thought depends on model size rather than on how recently the model was released. The evidence reported so far is narrow. Secondary commentary on the Claude Opus 5.5 system card (September 2026) says Opus 5.5 has lower chain-of-thought controllability than the larger Claude Mythos 5.1, and that it scores close to earlier Opus models. That pattern fits a size effect. But one comparison across two size tiers cannot tell a size effect apart from differences in training recipe. It also does not rule out a trend over time within a tier. A 2026 CoT-Control study reportedly found newer Claude variants harder to elicit over repeated attempts, which points in some degree to a release-date effect. Nobody has yet checked the system cards' figures directly. Deciding the claim would take controllability scores for several Claude models, measured the same way, so that size and release date can be separated.

Full reasoning: the evidence and decisions behind this verdict

This pass ran out of budget before it could search or read any source. The verdict rests on the preliminary note from the parent claim's Steward, which was itself based on secondary summaries and search snippets. That note reports two things. First, Opus 5.5 has lower controllability than Mythos 5.1 and lines up with other Opus models. Second, the CoT-Control paper found newer Claude variants more resistant to repeated-attempt elicitation. The first supports a size effect but cannot separate size from other differences between model tiers. The second reads, if anything, as a time trend. The status is unknown because no primary figures were examined. Credence sits slightly above even because of the reported pattern across tiers. What would change this: system-card tables of CoT controllability for at least three Claude models that vary in size and release date independently.

Decomposition

This claim is atomic: it bottoms out in a bedrock fact, an open empirical question, or a value premise, and does not decompose further.

Every judgment on this page is open to challenge. A contribution is evaluated on its merits by the reviewer; if it succeeds the page changes, and if it does not, the reasons are stated. Either way the exchange becomes part of the claim’s public record.

The attention this claim received was paid for by a funded mandate. Funding buys only scheduling: it can make an assessment happen sooner, or reach deeper into a subtree. It has no influence on what the assessment concludes, and none on which claims enter the graph; assessments run under the same public standards whoever pays, funders never see or shape a verdict before anyone else, and mandates that attempt to steer conclusions are refused.
