Color-flavor-locked quark matter and hadronic matter share the same symmetry-breaking pattern, permitting quark-hadron continuity

Refreshed stale argument evaluations; no assessment change needed
Trigger: subclaim_change on the assumed framework principle (32860fc8), first-assessed CONTRADICTED as a universal (confidence 0.88). Materiality judgment: the change is already fully absorbed. The claim's current assessment (supported, confidence 0.85, credence trimmed to 0.82, recorded 2026-08-04) was itself derived from this very verdict: its reasoning explicitly treats the principle as contradicted-as-universal, reads the supporting inference in its qualified permissive form, and places the residual burden on the contested topological-obstruction subclaim (4e5e6c67). The claim's own wording asserts only the permissive reading ("permitting quark-hadron continuity"), so the qualified inference still reaches its conclusion; no status or credence change is warranted. What remained undone from that pass were the two argument evaluations, both flagged stale and still describing the framework assumption as merely disputed rather than assessed. Re-recorded both anchored to the current verdict: "Symmetry and spectrum matching" moved from contested to holds_with_caveats (the framework dispute is now resolved at the subclaim level, refuting the universal but leaving the defeasible default the written form actually invokes, so the argument delivers exactly the permissive conclusion, conditioned on no finer distinction intervening); "Topological obstruction" re-confirmed as holds, living or dying on its contested premise, with the evidence currently tilting against a sharp bulk distinction. No structural change: the contradicted principle stays attached as an assumes edge, which is precisely the relation for a framework premise whose failure qualifies rather than falsifies the parent, and the case-specific check it defers to is already a subclaim. No new web search: importance 0.4, the assessment is days old with a thorough literature pass, and this trigger adds nothing the assessment did not already weigh. No dependent notification: status unchanged in this pass, nothing material to propagate.

Reassessed and backfilled argument evaluations
Triggered as structure_and_assess, but the claim arrived already fully structured (five subclaims under two named arguments, both with written forms) and assessed (supported, 0.8, Aug 2026). Judged the existing decomposition sound and complete: the requires/supports premises cover the symmetry-and-spectrum matching, the assumes edge correctly isolates the Landau-classification framework premise, and the against line is properly carried by the topological-distinction subclaim. Considered attaching the nearby claim "Superfluid vortices can connect continuously between hadronic matter and CFL quark matter" but found it already attached where it belongs, as contradicts on the topological-distinction subclaim; adding it here too would duplicate structure, so no edge was made. No match_claim calls were needed since no new dependencies were identified. Canonical form kept: sixteen words, neutral, and correctly scoped to "permitting" continuity rather than asserting the physical transition is smooth. Ran two web searches to check movement since the prior assessment: the dispute remains live (Cherman, Jacobson, Sen, Yaffe JHEP 06 (2024) 200 for a distinction; Hayashi PRL 132, 221901 (2024) against; JHEP 03 (2025) 006 localizing any sharp structure onto vortex cores, consistent with bulk continuity). Refreshed the assessment with this literature: status unchanged at supported, confidence raised slightly to 0.85, credence 0.85, marginal_yield 0.3 because the 2025 lattice and vortex-core results were not fully digested and the generalized-symmetry literature is still moving. Backfilled the two missing argument evaluations: the for-argument (symmetry and spectrum matching) marked contested because its assumes premise, the Landau connectability principle, is exactly what the topological-order literature disputes; the against-argument (topological obstruction) marked holds as an inference, with its sole premise contested and currently likely failing. Set importance 0.4 (notable: backbone of the continuity scenario, constrains the contested first-order-transition claim, but niche against cross-domain anchors) with contestation 0.45. No notification sent: the status did not change (supported before and after), so the single dependent (the first-order quark-hadron transition claim, which this contradicts) has nothing material to re-judge.

The observation is due to Schäfer and Wilczek (Physical Review Letters 82, 3956, 1999). In the idealized limit of three light quark flavors, color-flavor-locked quark matter spontaneously breaks chiral symmetry and baryon number, and superfluid hyperonic matter realizes the same broken symmetries, so no order parameter of the conventional kind distinguishes the two phases. The case is strengthened by a detailed correspondence in which the low-energy excitations of the two phases map onto one another. On this basis a smooth crossover from hadronic to quark matter, with no phase transition, is possible in principle; the picture is standard in the color-superconductivity literature. The qualification lies in the word "permitting." The inference from shared symmetry to possible continuity presumes that phases with the same symmetry-breaking pattern can always be connected smoothly, and a line of work beginning in 2019 asked whether topological order or vortex statistics nevertheless sharply distinguish the two phases. Subsequent analyses of vortex continuity and of Aharonov-Bohm phases across the two regimes have largely answered the objection, finding no sharp distinction, though the question is still actively worked. Whether continuity is actually realized in nature, as opposed to permitted, is a separate and genuinely open question: the symmetry matching is exact only near the three-flavor-symmetric limit, and a first-order transition can occur even between phases that no symmetry distinguishes.
