The 2016 measurement reported spontaneous pair emission consistent with Hawking's mechanism; a 2019 follow-up found the emission approximately thermal at the temperature predicted from the horizon's properties; and a 2021 measurement found the emission stationary in time, as the Hawking analogy requires. The evidence favors the claim, with two standing qualifications. First, the 2016 result drew a substantive critique arguing that the reported signal could reflect amplified classical or thermal noise rather than emission from the quantum vacuum, and that its statistical significance was overstated; the thermal-spectrum and stationarity measurements answered much of this, and the principal critic acknowledged the later work as considerably stronger, but the classical-seeding alternative has never been excluded to the standard of, say, a Bell-type test. Second, the spontaneous effect has been observed by a single research group; stimulated (classically seeded) analogue Hawking effects have been seen independently in water tanks and optical systems, but no independent laboratory has reproduced the spontaneous BEC observation.
