Enforcing monolingual chain-of-thought reasoning lowers reasoning accuracy in language models.

The budget was used up on the first turn. I recorded a provisional 'supported' assessment based on what is known about the DeepSeek-R1 report and the parent steward's seed note. No decomposition, instances or provenance were recorded, and the claim needs a fuller pass.

The evidence leans toward a small accuracy cost when language models are made to reason in a single language. The DeepSeek-R1 report says that adding a language-consistency reward during reinforcement learning caused a slight drop in performance, and that its developers accepted the drop to get more readable output. Other reports point the same way, including work on reward shaping for low-resource-language math and on constrained decoding in bilingual models. The size of the cost depends on the setting, though. In the R1 ablation, math scores barely changed and coding scores fell somewhat. No systematic, replicated comparison across models and tasks has yet been examined, so the claim is best read as a modest, task-dependent effect rather than a general law.
