    Trigger: subclaim_change on d4b74619 (column-budget premise, first assessment: SUPPORTED, confidence 0.8, credence 0.85). The claim's current assessment (CONTESTED, confidence 0.8, recorded 2026-08-06) was made after and explicitly in light of this same subclaim verdict: its reasoning cites the supported premise, the 2022 distributed-absorber counter-finding, and the resulting locus of dispute in the excess-to-distance inference. No new evidence has arrived since, the instance stances (three credible affirms, one hedged refereed deny, plus the live rival ~2.5 kpc Gaia distance) are unchanged, and re-recording an identical assessment would add nothing; the verdict therefore stands as-is (§22, absorbed change). What did need work: all three named argument evaluations were marked stale. Re-evaluated each against the premise's new standing. "Absorption-gas column comparison" moved from holds to holds_with_caveats: with its central factual premise now supported, the argument's vulnerability is no longer the premise but the implicit inferential condition that the untraced excess absorption sits at or beyond the arm, which the dust-scattering-halo analysis disputes; this matches the subclaim assessment's explicit caveat that the excess is compatible with local or distributed absorption.     Reconstructed grouped edges completed argument forms and evaluations

    Resumed pass following Curator action on my earlier escalation: the grouped re-attachment of three subclaims had been deduplicated against pre-existing ungrouped edges, and the Curator removed those three ungrouped edges to clear the way. I reconstructed the structure exactly as specified: (1) the spatial absorption-gas correlation claim (db98d775) re-attached as supports under the "Absorption-gas column comparison" argument; (2) the far-side atomic gas association claim (12c7d9a8) re-attached as supports under the "Far-side atomic gas association" argument; (3) the distributed line-of-sight absorber claim (2457f671) re-attached as contradicts under the "Line-of-sight distribution ambiguity" argument. I then brought the argument layer up to standard: rewrote the column-comparison argument's written form so the correlation sentence references its now-attached subclaim inline, and gave the far-side gas and line-of-sight arguments proper written forms referencing their subclaims (both had previously been label-only prose). All three named arguments received evaluations (all "holds": each inference goes through granting its premises; the load-bearing premises are the column-budget claim, the far-side association, and the distributed-absorber finding respectively). Assessment: confirmed unchanged at contested (confidence 0.75, credence 0.6). No substantive evidence changed; the restored edges are exactly the propositions the existing verdict already weighed. I re-recorded the assessment with the same verdict solely to link the now-attached subclaims inline in both texts and to anchor the argument evaluations to a current assessment; marginal_yield recorded low (0.2) since the dispute is mapped to its live cruxes and further improvement awaits new external evidence (3D dust mapping, scattering-halo follow-up, or resolution of the Gaia association).     The lower limit originates in the H.E.S.S. Collaboration's 2011 study of the remnant (the radio shell G353.6-0.7). The argument runs through two steps: the interstellar absorption inferred from the remnant's X-ray spectra exceeds the total atomic and molecular gas column in front of the Scutum-Crux arm, so gas at or beyond the arm is needed to supply it, and the arm lies at a kinematic distance of about 3.2 kiloparsecs, so the remnant must sit at or beyond that distance. An independent 2018 study using new Mopra molecular-line data re-derived the same placement, the spatial pattern of absorption across the remnant tracks the arm's molecular gas, and a separate association of the remnant with atomic gas at 5.2 to 6 kiloparsecs would place it farther still. The inference has since been credibly challenged. A 2022 analysis of the dust-scattering halo around the remnant's central compact object argues that the absorbing material may be spread along the line of sight rather than concentrated near 3 kiloparsecs, in which case the measured absorption does not force the remnant behind the arm. The same group adopts the rival view that the remnant lies at about 2.5 kiloparsecs, based on a Gaia parallax to a star possibly associated with the system, and that shorter distance underlies the widely discussed, unusually low mass estimate for the central compact object. The literature currently carries both distances. The dispute is empirical and resolvable: an independent determination of the three-dimensional distribution of absorbing gas and dust along this line of sight, or a firm distance to the remnant itself, would settle whether the absorption comparison genuinely establishes the 3.2 kiloparsec floor.
