The reported BEC analogue Hawking signal can be explained by amplified classical noise rather than quantum vacuum emission.

Absorbed subclaim change no reassessment
Trigger: subclaim ef955875-3fa1-49d2-8648-5a8bf39e8b71 (the classical-seeding mechanism premise) received its first assessment: verified, credence 0.96. Materiality judgment: not material to this claim's status. The standing contested assessment (confidence 0.72, credence 0.2) already treated the mechanism as physically available, resting on Wang/Jacobson 2017 and the stimulated-emission experiments; verification confirms an assumption already priced in rather than shifting the balance. Crucially, the verified subclaim carries the same scope limit the parent verdict turns on: classically seeded amplification produces correlations resembling spontaneous emission, not indistinguishable from it, so the thermal-spectrum (de Nova 2019) and stationarity (Kolobov 2021) discriminators that keep this claim at low credence remain unanswered by the mechanism alone. Verdict, confidence, and credence unchanged; re-recording the assessment would be churn. Action taken: refreshed the evaluation of the "Classical-seeding account" argument to anchor it to the premise's now-verified standing and to name the two scope caveats (resemblance vs indistinguishability; 2016-only reach). Its verdict stays holds_with_caveats. The opposing "Spontaneous-signature evidence" evaluation is unaffected, as none of its premises changed. No notification to dependents: this claim's assessment did not change.
Structured and assessed first pass
First pass (structure_and_assess). Decomposition: attached the uncontested base observation (Steinhauer's correlated phonon pairs, 5185448c) as presupposes; created two named arguments. FOR ("Classical-seeding account"): two new subclaims, the Wang-Jacobson classical-seeding mechanism (ef955875) and Leonhardt's statistical critique of the 2016 entanglement evidence (d50bd209), both confirmed novel by match_claim. AGAINST ("Spontaneous-signature evidence"): linked the existing thermal-spectrum claim (b64a9d5f) and created the 2021 stationarity claim (59e64879, novel per match_claim). Both arguments given written forms and evaluations. New subclaims scored 0.25-0.3: supporting empirical premises inside a niche debate. Importance confirmed at the Extractor's 0.35 (notable): crux of the parent detection claim (9312d5eb, 0.4) but the analogue-gravity subfield is peripheral graph-wide; contestation 0.55. Assessment: CONTESTED, confidence 0.72, credence 0.2. The classical explanation was a serious peer-reviewed challenge to the 2016 measurement and is not conclusively excluded, but the 2019 thermal-spectrum and 2021 stationarity results are unanswered by any published classical model, and the objection's author has publicly softened. Contested rather than contradicted because the exclusion is inferential and single-group. Verified evidence via web search (Leonhardt Ann. Phys. 2018; Wang-Jacobson PRA 2017; de Nova Nature 2019; Kolobov Nat. Phys. 2021; Steinhauer PRD 2022). Canonical form judged adequate as-is (19 words, neutral, accepted framing on both sides). Marginal yield 0.3: a deeper pass could digest the technical thermality literature (e.g. Isoard-Pavloff PRL 2020) and any post-2022 classical reanalysis. This assessment coheres with the parent's SUPPORTED verdict: the objection blocks verification there without unseating the detection. Notifying the parent's steward, whose evaluation of its classical-origin argument referenced this claim as not yet assessed.

The claim is the principal objection raised against the Technion group's reported detection of spontaneous Hawking radiation in a Bose-Einstein condensate. It has genuine theoretical footing: amplified thermal or classical fluctuations at a sonic horizon can produce cross-horizon correlations resembling spontaneous Hawking emission, and Leonhardt's published reanalysis argued that the 2016 measurement did not statistically establish entanglement of the observed phonon pairs. Against the 2016 result taken alone, the classical explanation remains a serious possibility that has never been conclusively excluded. The follow-up measurements, however, weigh heavily against it as an account of the full reported signal. In 2019 the group measured a correlation spectrum thermal at the temperature predicted by Hawking's formula, the specific fingerprint of vacuum-seeded emission, which amplified ambient noise has no natural reason to reproduce; and in 2021 they found the emission stationary in time, contrary to what self-amplifying classical mechanisms such as black-hole lasing would produce. No published classical model reproduces these features, and the objection's original author has described the follow-up work as substantially more convincing than the 2016 paper. The question stands as a real but weakened dispute: the classical explanation is likely wrong for the signal as a whole, yet the quantum origin of the correlations rests on inference from the spectrum and simulations rather than a loophole-free test, and only one group has observed the effect. A published classical model reproducing the 2019 thermal spectrum and 2021 stationarity would revive the claim; an independent replication with a direct entanglement demonstration would effectively close it.
