The distinctions IUT draws between isomorphic copies of objects carry essential mathematical content.
Assessment
Credible evidence or argument exists on multiple sides.
Inter-universal Teichmüller theory (IUT), Shinichi Mochizuki's proposed route to the abc conjecture, works with many copies of the same objects (Hodge theaters, prime strips, real vector spaces of arithmetic degrees) that are isomorphic to one another but that the theory insists on keeping apart under distinct labels. Whether those distinctions carry real mathematical content, or are bookkeeping that can be discarded without loss, is the deepest point of disagreement in the controversy over the proof. Mochizuki holds that the distinct copies embody distinct "arithmetic holomorphic structures" and that the theory's content lives precisely in the comparison between them. Peter Scholze and Jakob Stix, in their 2018 report, hold that identifications made along isomorphisms can always be undone by tracking the isomorphisms, so that nothing of substance is lost; they record that the examples of content offered to them in Kyoto had none, and Scholze has reaffirmed the position since, including in his 2021 review of the published papers.
The evidence remains divided, and lopsided in a way that has shifted slightly over time. Against the claim stand two facts that have held for seven years: no specific step of the Scholze-Stix argument has been exhibited that fails once their identifications are undone, and Mochizuki's rebuttals have not persuaded arithmetic geometers outside his circle. Every outside examiner who has taken a position, including those most sympathetic to Mochizuki, agrees that the IUT papers themselves do not establish that the copies are genuinely distinct structures.
For the claim stand two developments from outside Mochizuki's circle. Kirti Joshi maintains that his own arithmetic Teichmüller theory constructs many genuinely distinct arithmetic holomorphic structures, which would make the distinctions substantive even though, on his account, Mochizuki never proved them; that work is unrefereed, uses a definition different from Mochizuki's, and is rejected by Scholze. More significantly, the LANA project, a formalization effort at the ZEN Mathematics Center led by Fumiharu Kato that has worked within Mochizuki's own framework since 2023, reported in July 2026 that the monodromy inconsistency Scholze and Stix pointed to does not arise in a formulation that keeps the theory's distinctions, and so does not obstruct Mochizuki's intended strategy. The same report, however, isolates a separate compatibility at the same final stage of the argument, between the q-pilot in its native arithmetic holomorphic structure and the multiradial construction, that the project has not been able to prove, and its director has said that the passage from Theorem 3.11 to Corollary 3.12 as written cannot be formalized. Mochizuki's collaborator Yuichiro Hoshi has acknowledged that many project members see an insurmountable wall at that point.
The present picture is therefore that the distinctions appear to change the shape of the argument, so they are not obviously empty, but no one has yet shown that they carry the content Mochizuki attributes to them: the very comparison across distinct structures on which the proof depends is the step that remains unproven. What would settle the question is either a proof, in a form both sides accept, of the compatibility LANA has isolated, or a demonstration that the compatibility fails, or a refereed validation or refutation of Joshi's constructions.
Full reasoning: the evidence and decisions behind this verdict
The claim admits two readings that the discourse runs together: a weak one, that the distinctions are not mere bookkeeping and that collapsing them changes the mathematics, and a strong one, that they carry the content that makes the inequality of Corollary 3.12 provable. The verdict treats the claim as the strong reading, since that is what Mochizuki asserts and Scholze and Stix deny, while noting the weak reading separately.
Sources weighed. Scholze and Stix's report (ncatlab.org/nlab/files/why_abc_is_still_a_conjecture.pdf) states that identifying identical copies of objects along the identity makes Theorem 3.11 trivial rather than false, and that identifications along isomorphisms can be tracked; it is a denial of the claim by two leading arithmetic geometers. Scholze reaffirmed the position in his 2021 zbMATH review and in a November 2022 MathOverflow exchange defending Remark 9 of the report against Joshi. Joshi's papers (arxiv.org/pdf/2401.13508, arxiv.org/pdf/2505.10568, arxiv.org/pdf/2403.10430) affirm that distinct arithmetic holomorphic structures exist for canonical reasons, while stating that the IUT papers do not establish them; they are unrefereed, use a definition Joshi himself says differs from Mochizuki's, and have been rejected by Scholze and Will Sawin. Mochizuki's writings from 2018 onward, including his October 2025 report, affirm the claim; they are the position under dispute rather than independent evidence. The LANA project's July 2026 interim report (ncatlab.org/nlab/files/LANAProject-Report-July2026.pdf, section 10) states that the monodromy in the identifications among ordered one-dimensional real vector spaces, which Scholze and Stix present as the flaw, does not arise in LANA's own exposition and does not obstruct Mochizuki's intended strategy; the same report isolates an unproven compatibility between the q-pilot construction in its native arithmetic holomorphic structure and the multiradial construction, and declines to give a verdict on the theory. Fumiharu Kato's statement at the 17 July 2026 press conference, as reported on the nLab page (ncatlab.org/nlab/show/inter-universal+Teichm%C3%BCller+theory), was that the argument from Theorem 3.11 to Corollary 3.12 as written is unformalizable, with final judgment reserved because Mochizuki's explanation was evolving. Hoshi's March 2026 remark about an insurmountable wall is quoted on the same page. Only excerpts of the LANA report could be read on this pass; its section 10 is the single most important document for this claim and deserves a full reading.
How the subclaims weigh. The two considerations against the claim are the ones with the longest standing: no failing step has been exhibited once the identifications are undone, and the rebuttals have not persuaded outside experts, the latter assessed as verified. The direct supporting premise, that the IUT papers establish distinct arithmetic holomorphic structures, is denied by every independent party including Joshi, and is seeded low. The two indirect supports are weaker but real: Joshi's constructions are unrefereed and framework-dependent; LANA's finding that the monodromy arises only after the distinctions are collapsed comes from a team working inside Mochizuki's framework and has not been answered by Scholze or Stix, but LANA itself found a gap at the same stage, so the finding supports the weak reading of the claim more than the strong one.
Why contested rather than contradicted. Before 2026 the evidence pointed toward contradicted with a substantial minority dissent. The LANA report is the first independent examination to say that the specific inconsistency Scholze and Stix exhibited is an artifact of their identifications, and it comes from a group that includes mathematicians outside Mochizuki's circle and that has spent nearly three years on the question. That is enough to keep credible parties on both sides. Credence in the strong reading is nonetheless well below one half, because the comparison across distinct structures that would vindicate it is exactly the step nobody, LANA included, has been able to prove, and because the tracking argument of Scholze and Stix has never been shown to fail at a specific point.
What would change the verdict. A proof of the compatibility LANA isolated, accepted by parties outside Mochizuki's circle, would move the claim to supported or verified. A demonstration that the compatibility fails, or that the monodromy reappears once the tracked isomorphisms are followed through LANA's formulation, would move it to contradicted. A refereed evaluation of Joshi's constructions would move the indirect support in either direction.
Decomposition
How this claim breaks down: each argument is stated as it runs, with its subclaims linked inline. ↗︎ opens a subclaim; the map shows how they fit together.
If the IUT papers establish distinct arithmetic holomorphic structures, or failing that if Joshi's arithmetic Teichmüller theory establishes them in a framework that translates back to Mochizuki's, then the copies IUT keeps apart differ as mathematical structures and not merely as labels. Because the monodromy inconsistency Scholze and Stix exhibit arises only once those distinctions are collapsed, maintaining them changes the shape of the argument, so the distinctions carry content that the identifications discard.
The inference is sound if the premises hold, but the premises fare unequally. The direct route, that the IUT papers themselves establish distinct arithmetic holomorphic structures, is denied by every independent examiner, including Joshi, so the argument in practice rests on the two indirect premises: Joshi's constructions, which are unrefereed and use a definition he acknowledges differs from Mochizuki's, and LANA's finding that the monodromy inconsistency appears only once the distinctions are collapsed, which is recent, unanswered by Scholze and Stix, and accompanied by LANA's own report of an unproven compatibility at the same stage. Even granting all three premises, the argument shows that the distinctions change the argument's shape; it does not by itself show they carry enough content to make Corollary 3.12 provable.
Objects identified along isomorphisms can always be tracked, so any content the identifications discard could be restored by exhibiting a step of the simplified argument that fails once they are undone. Because Mochizuki has not identified such a step in the years since the Kyoto discussions, and because his rebuttals have not persuaded arithmetic geometers outside his circle, the distinctions are best read as bookkeeping rather than as carriers of essential content.
The tracking principle is standard and the inference from it is valid: content discarded by an identification along an isomorphism should be recoverable as a specific failing step. The argument's weight rests on the absence of any such exhibited step, which has held since 2018 but is now qualified by the LANA project's 2026 report that the monodromy diagram itself does not arise once the distinctions are kept; whether that counts as the missing exhibited step, or merely relocates the gap, is unresolved. The reception premise, that the rebuttals have not persuaded outside experts, is well established but is evidence about the community rather than about the mathematics, so it lowers confidence without deciding the question.
Provenance
Where this claim has been said, linked to its canonical form.
We pause to observe that with the simplifications outlined above, such as identifying identical copies of objects along the identity, the critical [IUTT-3, Theorem 3.11] does not become false, but trivial.
The report's thesis is that identifying isomorphic copies of objects along isomorphisms is a harmless simplification that discards no mathematical content, and that once it is made the argument for Corollary 3.12 collapses; the authors record that the examples of content they were offered in Kyoto carried no substance.
also completely unnecessary, since distinct arithmetic holomorphic structures *do* exist for canonical reasons [Joshi, 2021a, 2022]. Notably, [Mochizuki, 2022] suggests the existence of distinct arithmetic holomorphic structures but it is not clearly established in [Mochizuki, 2021a,b,c]
Joshi argues that the distinct arithmetic holomorphic structures Mochizuki's theory keeps apart are genuine and canonically constructible, so the distinctions are substantive, while holding that Mochizuki's own papers do not establish them and that his own framework is needed to do so.
