The distinctions IUT draws between isomorphic copies of objects carry essential mathematical content.

First pass. Decomposed into two named arguments. For: "Distinct arithmetic holomorphic structures are real", with one new subclaim (Mochizuki's IUT papers establish distinct arithmetic holomorphic structures; seeded 0.15), the existing Joshi claim 43d6b1fa (supports), and one new subclaim (Scholze-Stix monodromy inconsistency arises only when Hodge-theater distinctions are collapsed; seeded 0.45, sourced to the LANA July 2026 interim report). Against: "Identifications along isomorphisms are harmless bookkeeping", linking existing 6e13e052 and 0f8f9d96 as contradicts. Matcher confirmed both new subclaims novel; direction of the second was flipped by the Matcher to the affirmative conditional and adopted. Did not attach 958644b5 (SS identifies copies; verified) since it is framing rather than a dependency, nor Dupuy's 6311b107, which is a reported-position claim; both are discussed in prose. Assessed CONTESTED (confidence 0.8, credence 0.35). Key finding of this pass: the LANA formalization project's July 2026 interim report and 17 July 2026 press conference are material new evidence not reflected in the parent's or siblings' assessments. LANA says the Scholze-Stix monodromy does not arise in a formulation keeping the distinctions (supporting the claim's weak reading) while isolating an unproven compatibility at the same stage and calling the 3.11-to-3.12 passage as written unformalizable (leaving the strong reading unproven). Pre-2026 the evidence pointed toward contradicted; the LANA report is enough to keep credible parties on both sides. Only excerpts of the LANA report were readable this pass (web search budget exhausted after five searches), hence marginal_yield 0.5. Recorded two instances (Scholze-Stix 2018 denies; Joshi 2024 affirms). Importance set to 0.55, contestation 0.85. Domain set to mathematics for future passes. Canonical form left unchanged: fifteen words, neutral, and IUT is the abbreviation used across the neighbourhood. Notifying the parent steward, since the LANA development bears on whether the identifications are essential to the objection.

Inter-universal Teichmüller theory (IUT), Shinichi Mochizuki's proposed route to the abc conjecture, works with many copies of the same objects (Hodge theaters, prime strips, real vector spaces of arithmetic degrees) that are isomorphic to one another but that the theory insists on keeping apart under distinct labels. Whether those distinctions carry real mathematical content, or are bookkeeping that can be discarded without loss, is the deepest point of disagreement in the controversy over the proof. Mochizuki holds that the distinct copies embody distinct "arithmetic holomorphic structures" and that the theory's content lives precisely in the comparison between them. Peter Scholze and Jakob Stix, in their 2018 report, hold that identifications made along isomorphisms can always be undone by tracking the isomorphisms, so that nothing of substance is lost; they record that the examples of content offered to them in Kyoto had none, and Scholze has reaffirmed the position since, including in his 2021 review of the published papers. The evidence remains divided, and lopsided in a way that has shifted slightly over time. Against the claim stand two facts that have held for seven years: no specific step of the Scholze-Stix argument has been exhibited that fails once their identifications are undone, and Mochizuki's rebuttals have not persuaded arithmetic geometers outside his circle. Every outside examiner who has taken a position, including those most sympathetic to Mochizuki, agrees that the IUT papers themselves do not establish that the copies are genuinely distinct structures. For the claim stand two developments from outside Mochizuki's circle. Kirti Joshi maintains that his own arithmetic Teichmüller theory constructs many genuinely distinct arithmetic holomorphic structures, which would make the distinctions substantive even though, on his account, Mochizuki never proved them; that work is unrefereed, uses a definition different from Mochizuki's, and is rejected by Scholze. More significantly, the LANA project, a formalization effort at the ZEN Mathematics Center led by Fumiharu Kato that has worked within Mochizuki's own framework since 2023, reported in July 2026 that the monodromy inconsistency Scholze and Stix pointed to does not arise in a formulation that keeps the theory's distinctions, and so does not obstruct Mochizuki's intended strategy. The same report, however, isolates a separate compatibility at the same final stage of the argument, between the q-pilot in its native arithmetic holomorphic structure and the multiradial construction, that the project has not been able to prove, and its director has said that the passage from Theorem 3.11 to Corollary 3.12 as written cannot be formalized. Mochizuki's collaborator Yuichiro Hoshi has acknowledged that many project members see an insurmountable wall at that point. The present picture is therefore that the distinctions appear to change the shape of the argument, so they are not obviously empty, but no one has yet shown that they carry the content Mochizuki attributes to them: the very comparison across distinct structures on which the proof depends is the step that remains unproven. What would settle the question is either a proof, in a form both sides accept, of the compatibility LANA has isolated, or a demonstration that the compatibility fails, or a refereed validation or refutation of Joshi's constructions.
