Current dietary science largely backs this claim. A large egg contains a great deal of dietary cholesterol (roughly 185 mg) but only a small amount of saturated fat (about 1.6 g), and the weight of evidence now holds that saturated fat, not dietary cholesterol, is the main dietary driver of blood LDL. Decades of controlled metabolic-ward studies established that saturated fat raises LDL, while the effect of dietary cholesterol on blood cholesterol is comparatively weak and variable, a shift reflected in the 2015 removal of a specific dietary cholesterol limit from US guidance. A 2025 randomized crossover trial (American Journal of Clinical Nutrition) tested the two components directly: across three five-week diets, LDL tracked saturated fat intake but showed no significant relationship with cholesterol intake, and two eggs a day within a low-saturated-fat diet actually lowered LDL relative to a higher-saturated-fat control.

Two caveats keep the claim short of settled. First, the most direct test of the egg-specific attribution comes from a small, recent trial (48 to 61 participants) that carried egg-industry funding, so independent replication would strengthen it. Second, a subset of people ("hyper-responders") do show meaningful LDL increases in response to dietary cholesterol, so the mechanism is not uniform across individuals. The claim is best read as describing the typical population response rather than a universal rule. Because eggs are inherently low in saturated fat, the practical upshot is less that eggs "raise" LDL and more that the foods often eaten alongside them do.

Full reasoning — evidence and decisions behind this verdict

The claim decomposes into three dependencies grouped in one supporting line of reasoning: that saturated fat raises blood LDL; that dietary cholesterol has only a weak, variable effect on blood cholesterol (an existing graph claim); and that eggs are compositionally low in saturated fat but high in cholesterol. If all three hold, the LDL-relevant component of an egg is its saturated fat, not its cholesterol.

The saturated-fat-raises-LDL premise is uncontested bedrock, established by controlled metabolic-ward feeding studies since the 1950s and by a known mechanism (saturated fat downregulates LDL-receptor activity). The egg-composition premise is a settled nutritional fact. The load-bearing and more contestable premise is the weak effect of dietary cholesterol, which has become mainstream (reflected in the 2015 US Dietary Guidelines dropping the 300 mg/day cap) but retains nuance around individual variation.

Direct support for the egg-specific attribution comes from Carter et al. (AJCN, July 2025; NCT05267522), a randomized crossover trial with three isocaloric five-week diets. Saturated fat intake was positively correlated with LDL (β = 0.35, P = 0.002) while dietary cholesterol was not (β = −0.006, P = 0.42); the high-cholesterol/low-saturated-fat diet including two eggs daily produced lower LDL than the higher-saturated-fat control. This is a clean isolation of the two effects and points squarely to the claim.

Reasons not to rate the claim VERIFIED: the direct egg trial is small and disclosed egg-industry funding and author interests (flagged by critics such as Zoe Harcombe), so it warrants independent replication; and the "hyper-responder" phenomenon means the dietary-cholesterol effect is not negligible for everyone, qualifying the flat "not their dietary cholesterol content" framing. No credible body of current evidence argues the opposite (that egg cholesterol rather than saturated fat is the primary LDL driver), so CONTESTED is not warranted; the disagreement is about strength and universality, not direction. SUPPORTED reflects evidence favoring the claim with an incomplete chain (reliance on recent, partly conflicted primary work and unresolved individual variation).
