Assessment

The claim traces to reliable primary sources through a clear chain of evidence.

The Jacobian conjecture, open since Keller posed it in 1939, asserts that every polynomial self-map of complex n-space with nonzero constant Jacobian determinant has a polynomial inverse. In July 2026 Levent Alpöge announced an explicit counterexample in three variables, credited to the AI system Claude Fable 5 after a suggestion by Akhil Mathew: the degree-seven map (a, b, c) with a = (1+xy)³z + y²(1+xy)(4+3xy), b = y + 3x(1+xy)²z + 3xy²(4+3xy), c = 2x − 3x²y − x³z. Its Jacobian determinant is the constant −2, yet the three rational points (0, 0, −1/4), (1, −3/2, 13/2) and (−1, 3/2, 13/2) all map to (−1/4, 0, 0), so the map is not injective and cannot have a polynomial inverse. That the map has constant Jacobian determinant −2 yet is generically three-to-one is a finite exact computation, reproduced here symbolically and independently formalized in both Isabelle/HOL (Archive of Formal Proofs) and Lean 4.

Failure in dimension three carries to every higher dimension because a counterexample in dimension n yields one in every dimension m ≥ n by adjoining identity coordinates: the padded map has block-triangular Jacobian with the same determinant and inherits the collision. The conjecture is therefore false in every dimension n ≥ 3. A second, conceptual route reaches the same conclusion: the map arises as an étale triple cover of affine three-space whose source, the complement of the ramification divisor and a hyperplane preimage in P¹×P², is itself isomorphic to affine three-space, and a later general tangent-sweep construction produces counterexamples of arbitrarily large degree in every dimension above two.

No credible source disputes the result; the only live questions in the surrounding discourse concern the AI's role in the discovery and the two-dimensional case, which remains open and is untouched by this counterexample. Some trackers list the result as pending formal peer review, but for a statement whose proof is a short exact computation checked by hand, by computer algebra, and by two independent proof assistants, that status reflects publication convention rather than any residual mathematical doubt.

Full reasoning: the evidence and decisions behind this verdict

The verdict rests first on direct verification performed in this pass. Using the polynomials as stated in the Secret Blogging Seminar post (sbseminar.wordpress.com/2026/07/20/the-new-counterexample-to-the-jacobian-conjecture/) and at jacobianfun.org, the 3×3 Jacobian determinant of (a, b, c) with respect to (x, y, z) was expanded symbolically and equals −2 as a polynomial identity. Solving a = −1/4, b = 0, c = 0 exactly returns three rational solutions, (0, 0, −1/4), (1, −3/2, 13/2) and (−1, 3/2, 13/2), each of which substitutes back to the target; the pair (0, 1, −4) and (−2, 1, 2) likewise both map to (0, 1, 0). Since a polynomial automorphism is bijective, a non-injective map with nonzero constant Jacobian determinant is a counterexample to the conjecture in dimension three over ℚ, hence over ℝ, ℂ and every field of characteristic zero. This agrees with the graph's already verified finding that Alpöge's map has constant Jacobian determinant −2 yet is generically three-to-one.

The extension to n ≥ 3 is the stabilization lemma, a counterexample in dimension n yields one in every dimension m ≥ n by adjoining identity coordinates: for G(x, w) = (F(x), w) the Jacobian is block triangular with determinant det JF, and any two colliding points of F give colliding points of G. This is a one-line exercise, stated as Lemma 3.1 of arXiv:2608.00222, explained in the comment thread of Terence Tao's post (terrytao.wordpress.com/2026/07/21/a-digestion-of-the-jacobian-conjecture-counterexample/), and formally proved in the Isabelle/HOL entry.

Independent formal verification: the Archive of Formal Proofs entry (isa-afp.org/entries/Jacobian_Counterexample.html) proves in Isabelle/HOL that the determinant is identically −2, that three distinct rational points share an image, that the map has no polynomial inverse, and that identity padding gives counterexamples in every finite dimension at least three. An independently written Lean 4 / Mathlib formalization of the determinant and collision computations, kernel-checked with no sorry, is reported at zenodo.org/records/21514514. Two proof assistants and a symbolic reproduction here make an error in the base computation essentially impossible.

Second line of support: the conceptual construction of the map as a triple étale cover of A³, which the graph holds as verified in the source variety being isomorphic to affine three-space, and the general family in Gao's tangent-sweep construction (still unassessed by its own steward, so it adds corroboration rather than weight the verdict depends on).

Instances: every recorded source affirms the claim (John D. Cook's blog, The Conversation and its ScienceDaily republication, the AFP entry, the Zenodo Lean note); Wikipedia's article states the counterexample disproves the conjecture for n ≥ 3, and Kevin Buzzard's Xena post treats it as settled. Searches for dissent found none: the only debates concern attribution to the AI system and the still-open two-dimensional case. The comment in Tao's thread pointing to a "pending peer review" tracker is a note about publication status, not a mathematical objection.

Adversarial check: the claim could fail only if (i) the circulating polynomials differ from what Alpöge announced (irrelevant to the claim's truth, since the circulating map is itself a counterexample), (ii) the determinant identity or collision were wrong (excluded by exact computation here and in two proof assistants), or (iii) "Jacobian conjecture" were read as a two-dimensional statement only, in which case the claim's explicit range n ≥ 3 presupposes the general form, which is how Keller, Bass–Connell–Wright and Smale's Problem 16 state it. The residual 0.01 in credence covers nothing more than the generic possibility of an unnoticed shared error in independent exact computations.

What would change the conclusion: nothing short of a demonstrated flaw in the polynomial identity det J = −2 or in the exhibited collision, both reproducible in minutes.

argumentAlpöge's explicit counterexample with stabilizationThis argument, if it holds, bears in favour of the claim.constitution →Granting its premises, the conclusion follows.constitution →

Because Alpöge's explicit map on ℂ³ has constant Jacobian determinant −2 yet is generically three-to-one, it is a polynomial self-map with nonzero constant Jacobian determinant that is not injective, and hence not a polynomial automorphism, which refutes the conjecture in dimension three. Given that a counterexample in dimension n yields one in every dimension m ≥ n by adjoining identity coordinates, the conjecture then fails in every dimension n ≥ 3.

The inference is valid: a polynomial self-map with nonzero constant Jacobian determinant that identifies distinct points cannot be a polynomial automorphism, and identity padding preserves both properties. Both premises are established, the map's constant determinant and generic three-to-one behaviour by exact symbolic computation and two independent proof-assistant formalizations, and the stabilization lemma by a one-line block-determinant argument that nobody disputes. The argument is complete on its own and carries the verdict.

argumentGeometric construction and general familiesThis argument, if it holds, bears in favour of the claim.constitution →Granting its premises, the conclusion follows.constitution →

The counterexample can be built geometrically as a finite étale triple cover of affine three-space; because the source of that cover, the complement of the ramification divisor and a hyperplane preimage in P¹×P², is itself isomorphic to affine three-space, the cover is a polynomial self-map of A³ with nowhere-vanishing Jacobian that is three-to-one, refuting the conjecture in dimension three by a route independent of the coordinate computation. Moreover, a tangent-sweep construction produces constant-Jacobian counterexamples of arbitrarily large geometric degree in every dimension greater than two, so the failure is exhibited by a whole family in each dimension n ≥ 3 rather than by a single map.

Granting its premises the inference goes through: an étale triple cover of A³ whose source is itself A³ is exactly a non-injective polynomial self-map with nowhere-vanishing Jacobian, and a general family of such maps in each dimension above two settles every n ≥ 3 at once. The geometric leg rests on the source variety being isomorphic to affine three-space, which is verified by an explicit isomorphism and an independent bundle-tower proof; the family leg rests on Gao's tangent-sweep construction, which has not yet been assessed on its own and so adds corroboration rather than independent weight. The argument is a second route to a conclusion the explicit computation already establishes.

It shows the conjecture is false for every dimension larger than 2, with the original conjecture in two dimensions remaining open.

Explainer on the July 2026 announcement, describing the map's constant determinant and colliding points and drawing the conclusion for all dimensions above two. The same text was republished by ScienceDaily on 2026-08-04.

Alpöge's counterexample disproves the Jacobian conjecture for n = 3. It can trivially be extended to all n > 3 by defining the function to be Alpöge's function for three variables and the identity for the rest. The conjecture remains open for n = 2.

Expository post presenting Alpöge's map, noting the determinant is −2 everywhere and exhibiting two colliding points, then drawing the conclusion for all dimensions above two.

It also constructs identity-padded polynomial maps, proves their block-Jacobian determinant is unchanged, and thereby obtains counterexamples in every finite dimension at least three.
