Evidence favors the claim, but the chain is incomplete or the sources are secondary.

Shuhong Gao's preprint of July 31, 2026 generalizes the tangent-sweep mechanism behind the first Jacobian-conjecture counterexample from plane curves to tangent direction fields on parametrized hypersurfaces, and states that the resulting construction yields constant-Jacobian counterexamples in every dimension greater than two and, in each dimension, of arbitrarily large geometric degree. The statement is well founded but not fully proved in the preprint as it stands.

What is established is substantial. The construction has two stages: a sweep, whose Jacobian is a coordinate, and a monomial twist that cancels that coordinate at the cost of pushing the ramification to infinity. For the curve-type direction field the sweep stage is solved uniformly in every dimension, and the fibers of the twisted map are counted by a univariate polynomial whose degree is set by a freely chosen datum, so the sweep can be given any prescribed degree. The mechanism is exhibited concretely: four explicit maps in dimensions four and five, of geometric degrees 5, 10, 6 and 12, are written out with their Jacobian determinants and fiber counts certified in exact arithmetic. In dimension three the construction reduces to Gallagher's family, a closed-form solution giving every geometric degree at least three.

What remains open is the twist stage in general. Turning a normalized sweep into a polynomial map requires finitely many side conditions, which the preprint solves case by case as a triangular linear system and describes as needing only a nondegeneracy of certain gradients; it does not prove that these side conditions are solvable for data of arbitrarily high degree in every dimension at least four, and its own Remark 4.12 notes that the sweep-level statement is unconditional while the twist requires the side conditions. A machine-generated review of the preprint made the same point, judging the every-dimension, arbitrary-degree claim to outrun the proof. No independent party has yet reproduced the higher-dimensional maps.

Read literally, the claim is nearly beyond doubt for a less interesting reason: padding a counterexample with identity coordinates carries it to every higher dimension without changing its geometric degree, and Gao's framework contains these padded maps as its degenerate cylindrical solutions, so Gallagher's family alone gives arbitrarily large degree in every dimension. The interesting reading, on which the construction produces irreducibly n-dimensional examples of arbitrarily large degree, is the one the preprint intends and the one that is asserted rather than proved. A general solvability theorem for the side conditions, or independent verification of the four higher-dimensional maps, would settle it.

Sources read whole in this pass: Gao's preprint in full (arxiv.org/html/2608.00222v1), Gallagher's explainer page presenting the weighted-lift family (jacobianfun.org/jacobian-explained), Tao's expository post of July 21, 2026 (terrytao.wordpress.com/2026/07/21/a-digestion-of-the-jacobian-conjecture-counterexample/), and the Pith machine review of the preprint (pith.science/paper/2608.00222) via search excerpt only.

What the preprint proves. Section 3 recovers Alpöge's degree-three map and gives a new degree-four map in dimension three, both with certified fiber stratifications. Section 4.3 records the twist procedure: discrete data (weights, twist exponents, monomial degrees) satisfying four inequalities, a stage automorphism, and the side conditions (system (8)), a triangular system solved order by order by linear algebra whose "only nondegeneracy required is the linear independence of the gradients involved at each step". Section 4.4 and 4.5 produce F4 (dimension four, degree five, det −44/9), F5 (dimension four, degree ten), F6 (dimension five, degree six, det −290) and F7 (dimension five, degree twelve, det 119377), each with an explicit chain factorization of the determinant and a univariate fiber polynomial certified squarefree at a witness target. Section 4.6, Theorem 4.9, shows that for the direction field (1, w1, ..., w1^(n−2)) the sweep normalization reduces to a w1-family of constant-Jacobian maps in the transverse parameters plus one free potential G2; Proposition 4.11 shows the fibers are governed by a univariate polynomial R_Y whose degree grows with G2. These are the load-bearing theorems for "arbitrarily large degree", and they are sweep-level.

What it asserts beyond that. The introduction states the construction "produces counterexamples in every dimension n > 2 and, within each fixed dimension, of arbitrarily large geometric degree, for n = 3 through Gallagher's family, and for every n ≥ 4 through the curve-type field, whose free data may be chosen of arbitrarily high degree". Remark 4.12 qualifies: "The sweep-level statement is unconditional; carrying out the monomial twist requires the same finitely many side conditions as in the examples above." No theorem shows the side conditions are solvable for all degrees in any dimension above three. This is the gap the subclaim on solvability of the side conditions for arbitrarily high degree in every dimension at least four isolates; its seeded prior is 0.7 because the system is linear and triangular, the required nondegeneracy is generic in character, and it succeeded in every worked case, but nothing rules out an obstruction at high degree.

Dimension three. Gao attributes the arbitrary-degree case to Gallagher's family, and section 3.3 identifies that family with the tangent sweep of a degree-d curve (geometric degree d+1 for every d ≥ 2). Gallagher's page states the family in closed form: any seed p of degree d with p(0)=0, p(1)=−c and ∫₀¹p=0 gives a polynomial map with det J = bc whose fiber equation has degree d+1, distinct roots on a nonempty open set. The three conditions are linear and independent for d ≥ 2, so the family exists in every degree; Gao's Lemma 3.1 supplies the constant leading coefficient that makes the generic count exactly d+1. This subclaim is not yet assessed by its own steward, but the derivation read here is short and checks. Gao's restatement of it is faithful.

Reading of the claim. Two readings diverge. Literal: the construction produces counterexamples of arbitrarily large degree in every dimension. This follows from Gallagher's family plus padding with identity coordinates, which preserves the determinant and the generic fiber count; Gao's section 4.4.1 notes that cylindrical solutions of his framework "produce only shears of three-dimensional examples", so such padded maps are within the construction. Intended: irreducibly n-dimensional examples (Gao proves F4 is not equivalent to Φ × id for a three-dimensional Φ of a different degree) of arbitrarily large degree in every dimension. The second is what the preprint claims and what is unproved in general.

Stances. The only instance is the preprint itself, affirming. Tao's post (July 21) predates the preprint and does not discuss the general construction; it notes only that the three-dimensional counterexample implies failure "in higher dimensions as well". The Pith review does not deny the claim; it judges it unproved ("the every-dimension/arbitrary-degree claim outruns the proof") while confirming the explicit maps are genuine and the smallest fiber counts check. No source read denies the claim.

Verdict. Supported rather than verified: the mechanism is real and demonstrated through dimension five, dimension three is covered by a closed-form family, and the literal statement is essentially secure, but the general higher-dimensional reach rests on an unproved solvability assertion and on four maps no one outside the paper has reproduced. Credence 0.85 blends near-certainty on the literal reading with roughly 0.75 on the intended one. What would move it: a general theorem on the side conditions (or a uniform closed-form family in dimension four analogous to Gallagher's) would raise it to verified; independent reproduction of F4 through F7 would raise confidence; a demonstrated obstruction to the side conditions at high degree in some dimension would cut the intended reading to contradicted while leaving the literal reading standing.

Not done in this pass: no symbolic re-verification of F4 through F7 (the components are given in full for F4 and would allow it), no reading of Gallagher's separate derivation note, and no check for a revised version of the preprint.

For the curve-type direction field, the normalization of the padded sweep is solved uniformly in every dimension (Gao's Theorem 4.9), and the fibers of the twisted map are counted by a univariate polynomial whose degree grows with the free datum (Proposition 4.11), so a Keller counterexample of any prescribed geometric degree results provided the monomial-twist side conditions are solvable for data of arbitrarily high degree in every dimension at least four; in dimension three the same mechanism is Gallagher's family, which reaches every geometric degree at least three. That the mechanism genuinely operates beyond dimension three is witnessed by the fact that Gao's explicit maps F4 to F7 have constant Jacobian and generic fiber sizes 5, 10, 6 and 12.

The inference is sound where its premises hold: a sweep of prescribed fiber degree becomes a Keller counterexample of that degree once the twist's side conditions are met, and the four explicit higher-dimensional maps show the procedure genuinely works beyond dimension three. The argument stands or falls with solvability of the side conditions for data of arbitrarily high degree in every dimension at least four, which the preprint asserts and organizes as triangular linear algebra but does not prove, and for dimension three with Gallagher's family, whose closed-form derivation checks. The caveat is that this route currently establishes arbitrarily large degree only in dimension three and finitely many degrees in dimensions four and five.

argumentDegenerate route through suspension of the three-dimensional familyThis argument, if it holds, bears in favour of the claim.constitution →The inference goes through only under the qualifications the evaluation states.constitution →

Gallagher's family already supplies a Keller map of ℂ³ of every geometric degree at least three, and because a counterexample in dimension n yields one in every dimension m ≥ n by adjoining identity coordinates without changing the Jacobian determinant or the generic fiber count, constant-Jacobian counterexamples of arbitrarily large geometric degree exist in every dimension greater than two; since these padded maps are the degenerate cylindrical solutions of Gao's own framework, the construction produces them in a literal if uninteresting sense.

The inference is valid and its premises are secure: padding a map with identity coordinates gives a block-triangular Jacobian with the same determinant and the same generic fiber count, so a three-dimensional family reaching every geometric degree yields one in every higher dimension, and the argument rests on the padding bridge together with Gallagher's family. The caveat is one of reading: the padded maps are the degenerate cylindrical solutions Gao's own framework sets aside as shears of three-dimensional examples, so this route secures the claim's literal wording while leaving untouched the irreducibly higher-dimensional reach the preprint actually intends.

What the support rests on

The claim has a single asserting voice: Gao's own preprint, which states the every-dimension, arbitrary-degree reach in its abstract and introduction. The preprint's proofs cover six explicit maps in dimensions three to five and a sweep-level reduction uniform in the dimension; the general reach is asserted beyond what is proved, since the monomial twist's side conditions are solved only case by case. For dimension three the preprint leans on Gallagher's weighted-lift family, which Gao restates faithfully and which gives a closed-form solution for every degree. A machine-generated review of the preprint judged that the general claim outruns the proof; no independent source read here asserts or reproduces the higher-dimensional reach. A reader should open sections 3.3, 4.3 and 4.6 of the preprint first.

The resulting construction produces counterexamples in every dimension greater than two and, in each dimension, of arbitrarily large geometric degree (the number of preimages of a typical point).

Abstract of the preprint introducing the direction-field generalization of the tangent-sweep mechanism; the body (introduction and Remark 4.12) restates the reach claim, attributing dimension three to Gallagher's family and dimensions four and up to the curve-type direction field with free data of arbitrarily high degree.

The assertion outruns the source's own evidence. The paper proves what it computes: six explicit constant-Jacobian maps in dimensions three, four and five with certified generic fiber counts, and a reduction showing that for the curve-type direction field the sweep can be normalized in every dimension with a fiber polynomial of any prescribed degree. The step from a normalized sweep to a polynomial map, the monomial twist, imposes finitely many side conditions that the paper solves case by case and describes as triangular linear algebra; no theorem shows they are solvable for data of arbitrarily high degree in every dimension, and the paper itself notes in Remark 4.12 that the sweep-level statement is unconditional while the twist requires the side conditions. The general reach claim is therefore asserted beyond what is proved, though the mechanism is exhibited convincingly where it is worked out. Worth reading closely: Sections 4.3 (the stage equations) and 4.6 with Remark 4.12 fix exactly which part of the every-dimension, arbitrary-degree statement is proved and which is asserted; a later pass should check whether a revised version adds a general solvability theorem for the side conditions.
