The claim asserts WIV possessed or had access to a bat coronavirus close enough to SARS-CoV-2 to serve as an engineering backbone. This is a load-bearing premise of the intentional-engineering hypothesis. Weight of evidence leans AGAINST for KNOWN viruses: - The closest relative WIV is documented to have held is RaTG13 (~96.2% identity). The closest known relative overall, BANAL-52 (Laos, ~96.8%), was found by the Pasteur Institute and is not established to have been at WIV. - Mainstream virology holds that ~96% identity is far too divergent to serve as a practical engineering backbone: it represents on the order of a thousand-plus nucleotide differences / decades of evolutionary divergence, not the near-identical starting point that reverse-genetics backbone engineering requires. Science/Health Feedback reviewers concluded RaTG13 could not serve as a template for SARS-CoV-2. Andersen et al.'s 'Proximal Origin' made 'not derived from any previously used virus backbone' a keystone argument, and NIAID stated the EcoHealth/WIV-studied viruses are 'very far distant' from SARS-CoV-2. On the known-virus reading, the claim is close to contradicted. But genuine contestation keeps it from CONTRADICTED: - The claim is disjunctive ('possessed OR had access to') and the crux subclaim ('~96% is too divergent to be a backbone') is a technical judgment that a minority of credentialed researchers dispute. - WIV's non-disclosure of parts of its sample database, the Mojiang-mine sampling history, and the DEFUSE grant proposal fuel a live, credentialed argument that WIV may have held undisclosed viruses closer than those published. There is no direct evidence such a virus existed, but its non-existence cannot be demonstrated — absence of evidence is not evidence of absence here. Holistic judgment: on published/known viruses the claim is essentially unsupported-to-contradicted, but the undisclosed-collection possibility sustains a genuine, live disagreement with credible voices on both sides. CONTESTED (leaning against) is the honest label. Assessment is provisional: it would move toward CONTRADICTED if WIV's full collection were shown to contain nothing closer than ~96%, and toward SUPPORTED if a closer WIV-held virus were documented. Subclaims (provisional, awaiting their own assessment): FOR — WIV possessed RaTG13 (well-documented, effectively verified but insufficient by itself); WIV held undisclosed closer viruses (unsupported/speculative). AGAINST — a ~96% virus is too divergent to be a practical backbone (mainstream-supported technical crux).
